Under the wave of ” Industrie 4.0″, Hong Kong industry is actively seeking transformation and innovation to enhance the competitiveness of their products and services. In order to meet the needs of industry upgrading and transformation, CMA Testing, established by the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong (CMA), is officially announced the Grand Opening of newly established Technology Commercialisation Center “CMA+” on 14 September 2021.
“CMA+” covers an area of 5,000 square feet and is located in the Fo Tan Industrial Zone, adjacent to Hong Kong Science Park. The center has organic, analytical chemistry laboratories and other advanced innovation and technology equipment to facilitate the research and development of partner companies and also reduce their capital investment in product design and development. At the same time, “CMA+” deeply understands the needs of the industry, builds communication bridges with scientific research institutions, and matches companies with appropriate technical solutions. In the trial operation stage, more than 10 companies have entered or are negotiating to join the “CMA+”, covering fields such as green energy, environmental projects, health and hygiene, advanced materials, food and medicine, and biotechnology.
To commemorate the event, CMA Testing invited Ms. Rebecca Pun, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology , as the guest of honour to give a speech.
In the opening remarks, CMA President , Dr. Allen Shi Lop-tak, commented that basic scientific research has always been Hong Kong’s competitive advantage. Top university scientific research institutions and talents nurture the development of “re-industrialization”. “However, scientific research in Hong Kong often stays in the middle and upstream stages, and may not meet the needs of manufacturers during production. As a result, it is difficult for the industry to find suitable technologies and partners when trying to be innovative. “
In view of this, CMA planned to establish a Technology Commercialisation Platform since 2019 to solve the shortcomings of Hong Kong’s insufficient application of scientific research and promote breakthroughs in key technologies in the industry ; “We combine our business network and the testing and certification services of CMA Testing, coordinate the cooperation via “Government”, “Industry”, “Academia” and “Research, then our local scientific research projects can better meet the needs of production and market, scientific research results can be launched into the market in a shorter time and at a lower cost.” President said, as China is developing at full speed into a world manufacturing centre and supporting Hong Kong’s development into an international innovation and technology center, we should seize this historical opportunity to accelerate the development of an “intermediate testing and maturation” platform for scientific and technological achievements locally, focusing on the intermediate testing within “after scientific research and before mass production” then will improve Hong Kong’s entire innovation industry chain.
CMA Industrial Development Foundation Limited Chairman cum CMA Vice President Mr. Robert Lok stated that the name of “Technology Commercialisation platform” is “CMA+”, which means that CMA Testing provides the services to “Government”, “Industry”, “Academia” and “Research” from the original testing industry. In addition to innovation and laboratory equipment support, “CMA+” will also provide four pillar services for the problems encountered by technology companies in the initial stage; “from technology and certification support, manufacturer and supply chain coordination, financing and legal support, to marketing services” , allowing companies connect with required services and partners through CMA+ quickly, and making scientific research results easier to be actualized.
Chairman also pointed out “CMA+” has successfully provided technical matching for local university scientific research teams during the trial operation stage. The “mobile RT-PCR testing laboratory” established in cooperation with CaTAGene, a subsidiary of CMA Testing, is a new type of PCR detection equipment for coronavirus. The novel coronavirus can be quickly diagnosed within 40 minutes, and it is lightweight and portable and easy to operate. It has been adopted by governments and medical institutions in Italy, South America, and the Middle East. Chairman hoped that more partners will join in the future, so that “CMA+” will develop into a pre-incubation center, which will contribute to the long-term development of Hong Kong’s high-tech industry.
